Thu 20 May 2010 - The Menopause
The Menopause is a time of physical, emotional and spiritual challenge and transformation. It can be rather too challenging for some women, and not only because of the physical symptoms that some women experience. Each woman's menopause is unique with some women being plagued by hot flushes, sleeplessness and loss of libido. For other women there can be a disturbance of emotional stability. Whilst for another group it can be a time of positive transformation.
In this talk you can hear about how 4 different approaches from 4 different practitioners can help with this specific health issue.
Herbal medicine has had a role in supporting women's health for thousands of years, for balancing hormones and for supporting physical and emotional health. Mary Barton will share how herbs are a good fit for our bodies and are gentle and effective in achieving change.
Creating good eating patterns and habits can positively influence many symptoms experienced around the menopause, while some, such as sugar and alcohol, will make things worse. Kim Crundall will share simple, but extremely effective, ways to positively influence your diet at this time of change.
Recent quality (and indeed local) research is now illustrating that acupuncture is particularly effective at treating symptoms of hot flushes, anxiety and depression. Kate Henley will talk about how these trials are showing that acupuncture has a similar effect on hormones circulating in the blood as HRT and show that this therapy has a useful role in the treatment of menopause.
Many people going through the menopause will find their personal energy blocked. Olive Hickmott will explain how simple guided imagery can assist with clearing blocks, reducing hot flushes and setting your energy system for wellness.
Tue 13 July 2010 - Empowerment through self awareness
We all have our own internal view of the world which shapes our response to our surrounding and events in life. This view of the world either supports us in taking action and living in our power or limits us taking action and causes to live without our power.
By becoming more aware of our own unique internal view of the world we can identify what disempowers us, as the first step to exploring new empowering alternatives. The purpose of this internal view of the world is to ensure that all our behaviour meets our deepest needs or meets our values.
This talk will identify the different elements of your internal view of the world and explore the relationship with behaviour in everyday life.
Wed 22 September 2010 - The Alexander Technique and Chair Yoga & Meditation
The Alexander Technique teaches the skilful “use of the self”: how we move, how we stay still, how we breathe, how we learn, how we organise our awareness and focus of attention and, above all, how we choose our reactions in increasingly demanding situations. It is a subtle and thoughtful discipline but essentially practical and problem-solving.
It works by helping you to identify and prevent the harmful postural habits that aggravate, or may be the cause of, stress, pain and under-performance. You learn how to release tension and rediscover balance of mind and body. With increased awareness you can:
- be poised without stiffness
- move gracefully and powerfully with less effort
- be alert and focused with less strain
- breathe and speak more easily and freely
- be calm and confident
Yoga sessions include a balanced group of physical exercises that stretch and flex the body allowing the muscles to let go of built up tension, and using the breath to focus the mind. In addition, each class includes a period of deep relaxation. A combination of these three - exercise, breath and relaxation - over time will enhance flexibility, increase strength and stamina, improve concentration and help to calm the mind. It is not a quick fix; rather a gradual process that brings many rewards and helps you move towards self-development.
Tihs talk will attempt to demonstrate the power of yoga through very simple exercises, breathing and relaxation all achieved sitting in a chair.
